Light the High Beam. (Epiphany Sunday)

The Visit of the Magi

2 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi^[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, ² asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star in the east^[b] and have come to pay him homage.” ³ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him, ⁴ and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah^[c] was to be born. ⁵ They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet:

⁶ ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah,
for from you shall come a ruler
    who is to shepherd^[d] my people Israel.’ ”

⁷ Then Herod secretly called for the magi^[e] and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. ⁸ Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” ⁹ When they had heard the king, they set out, and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen in the east,^[f] until it stopped over the place where the child was. ¹⁰ When they saw that the star had stopped,^[g] they were overwhelmed with joy. ¹¹ On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. ¹² And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

<The High Beam in the Darkness>

Dear church family, a new sun is rising in this new year. We have navigated seasons where we had to wait for this dawn while battling the piercing chill of winter winds and the weight of thick, gray clouds. However, we serve a God who grants us a new sun every day and every year—freely, graciously, and without fail. I believe with all my heart that this same God is preparing something truly amazing for us in 2026. I find myself filled with holy anticipation, eager to see the gifts God has tucked away for us in the months to come.

Have you ever had to rely on your high beams? Back in the cities of South Korea, I rarely used them. The streets were always flooded with light; every highway and small road was lined with streetlights. But since moving to Northern Maine, my high beams have become my best friends. In the vast darkness of our woods, if someone is driving in front of me with their high beams on, I don’t need mine; I simply borrow their light and follow their lead. But when I am alone at the front of the line, I must switch on my own high beams. They are my only protection against a sudden moose or deer, and the only thing keeping me from going astray in the dark.

Last week, I witnessed several people switching on their "spiritual high beams," keeping themselves on the right path and allowing others to follow their glow. While our older children were attending the Korean Youth Retreat, we were invited to a wedding reception for students I taught 14 years ago. Back then, they were just teenagers, the same age my children are now. It filled my heart with joy to see that they had kept their faith through the years. The groom met his wife in a Christian club at university, and they remain active leaders in their church today. Seeing them grow in the Light was a beautiful testament to a steady high beam.

I also met the leaders of that youth retreat—some of whom were former members of our own church. I was amazed to see Korean-American youth gathered from everywhere: Houlton, Pittsburgh, and beyond. The leaders told me about parents who risk their very lives and sacrifice everything for the spiritual health of their children. Because those parents made "Faith" their top priority, their children did the same. By lighting their high beams, these parents created a path for an entire generation to follow.

One more story: Ann(Mom) and Ben (6th grade) from Hodgdon church have faced many hardships over the last few years. Despite the trials, they decided to read the Bible together every night for 30 minutes. There were bad days and busy nights, but they remained faithful. On December 31st, Ann texted me: "Pastor Joyce~ We did it! We read the whole Bible together!!!" Their faithfulness has become a high beam for others. Now, 5-year-old Mark and 8-year-old Hazel are following in their footsteps. Even my own mother, who reads the Bible four times a year, encouraged me to set my own high beam higher this year, reading the Bible twice a year in both English and Korean.

 

<The High Beam over 600 Years>

We find the ultimate example of a long-distance high beam in the story of Epiphany. Today, we celebrate "Epiphany Sunday." The word comes from the Greek epiphaneia, meaning "to manifest" or "to reveal." It commemorates the moment God, who took on human flesh as a baby, was first revealed to the entire world. Though the traditional date is January 6th, we celebrate it today to remember that the Messiah did not come only for one group of people, but for all of humanity—including the Gentiles.

Who were these "Wise Men"? They were Magi—priests and astronomers from the region of ancient Babylon and Persia, nearly 800 miles away. Even though they were outsiders, they knew the Hebrew prophecies. They knew that "a star shall come out of Jacob" (Numbers 24:17) and that it signaled the birth of the King of Kings. When that star finally appeared, they did not hesitate. They began a journey that required walking nearly 20 miles a day for 40 days. Think about that: I drove 40 minutes to get here, but they walked for 40 days just to worship.

How did these foreigners know the scriptures so well? Most scholars point to Daniel. About 600 years before Jesus was born, Daniel was taken as a young captive to Babylon. Because his wisdom was so profound, he eventually became the "Chief of the Magicians" (Daniel 2:48), the head over all the wise men and priests of the empire. Daniel was a man of deep discipline; he refused the King’s meat, prayed toward Jerusalem three times a day, and survived the lion's den. Daniel served under four kings, and through his influence, he shared specific prophecies about the timing of the Messiah. We call these Wise Men the "Spiritual Descendants of Daniel." The high beam Daniel lit in the 6th century B.C. was passed down through 20 generations for over 600 years until it led those Magi to the feet of baby Jesus.

Daniel’s high beam was fueled by four things: Word, Prayer, Fellowship, and Witness. He was a man of the Word, a man of prayer, a man who shared life with his three friends, and a man who witnessed to the pagan kings. We are not the source of the Light; we are merely the tools that carry it.

In the movie Journey to Bethlehem, we are reminded that Bethlehem was Joseph’s ancestral home. He likely had family there, yet there was "no room for them in the inn." It is historically possible that Joseph’s family rejected them because they could not accept the "scandal" of a virgin birth. Imagine Joseph (about 18-20 years old) and Mary (only 13-15 years old), alone and isolated in a stable meant for animals. In that lonely moment, how much joy and confirmation must the Wise Men have brought?

They brought Gold for a King, Frankincense for the Holy Son of God, and Myrrh for the Savior who would suffer and die. Historical evidence suggests Jesus may have been laid in a stone manger—the kind used to separate unblemished lambs before sacrifice. The Myrrh was a high beam looking forward to the cross. Even at the beginning, the light showed the end: a Savior born to die so that we might live.

 

<The Reason Why We Light Our High Beam>

Church, it is time for us to switch on our high beams for three reasons:

First, for the new life among us. In the last six months, God has brought so many new souls to our congregation. New life has been born! But if these "seeds" are not nurtured, they may fall among thorns or on rocky ground. We must light our high beams to show these new believers how to grow and walk in the Way.

Second, for the healing of our community. Our town suffered a great tragedy last year. Thirteen residents lost their homes and businesses in the Patten fire. The scars are still visible in the heart of our town. But on Christmas Eve, we lit a fire of a different kind—the light of hope. We opened our doors as a collection center. On the 8th of this month, we will meet with town leaders and other pastors to discuss long-term recovery. Like the steeple of our church piercing the night sky, God is calling us to be the high beam of Patten so that our neighbors do not lose their way.

Third, because the days are growing dark. We live in the time between the first coming of Christ and His second coming. The mission of the early church was to prepare the world for His return. Sometimes the winter wind feels too cold, and the clouds seem too thick. We grow anxious. But the sun will rise. Jesus will return. We must be ready.

 

<How to Light Our High Beam>

We learn from Daniel how to maintain our light. He was a master of spiritual discipline.

1. He read the Word: He knew the scriptures better than the locals.
2. He prayed: He risked his life to pray three times a day.
3. He shared Fellowship: He didn't walk alone; he walked with his brothers in faith.
4. He witnessed: He shared the Light with those who didn't know God.

On January 1st, a new group formed in our church: the 'Ladies of Faith.' It began with Karen and her dedicated group of caregivers. These women have committed to reading the Bible together throughout this year. Isn't that amazing? By lighting her own 'high beam,' Karen has encouraged those around her to draw closer to the Lord. Now, as each member lights her own path, they are helping their families and our entire community. They have decided to light their high beams together! May God richly bless the Ladies of Faith!

I want to challenge each of you today. On the slip of paper you received, write down how you will light your high beam this year. Will you give 5 or 15 minutes to the Word? Will you set a time and place to pray for your neighbors? Will you join a small group for fellowship? Will you commit to witnessing to at least one person this year?

Let us not be content with the "low beams" of our daily worries. Let us switch on the High Beam of Christ! Let’s light the way for 2026!

(마태복음 2:1–12)

<어둠 속의 하이빔>

사랑하는 교회 가족 여러분,
새해에 새로운 해가 떠오르고 있습니다.
우리는 겨울의 차가운 바람과 두꺼운 회색 구름 속에서 새벽을 기다려야 했던 시간들을 지나왔습니다.
그러나 우리는 매일, 매년, 새로운 해를 주시는 하나님을 섬깁니다.
하나님은 그것을 값없이, 은혜로, 그리고 변함없이 주십니다.

저는 마음 깊이 믿습니다.
이 하나님께서 2026년을 위해 놀라운 것을 준비하고 계십니다.
다가올 날들 속에 하나님께서 숨겨 두신 선물들을 생각하면, 제 마음은 거룩한 기대감으로 가득 찹니다.

여러분은 하이빔에 의지해 운전해 본 적이 있나요?
한국의 도시에서는 하이빔을 거의 쓸 일이 없었습니다.
거리마다 불빛이 가득했고, 큰길과 작은 길마다 가로등이 있었습니다.

하지만 북부 메인으로 이사 온 후, 하이빔은 제 가장 친한 친구가 되었습니다.
숲으로 둘러싸인 깊은 어둠 속에서, 앞차가 하이빔을 켜고 있으면 저는 제 불을 켤 필요가 없습니다.
그 빛을 빌려 따라가면 됩니다.

그러나 제가 맨 앞에 혼자 있을 때는, 반드시 제 하이빔을 켜야 합니다.
그것은 갑자기 나타날 수 있는 무스나 사슴으로부터 저를 지켜주는 유일한 보호막이며,
어둠 속에서 길을 잃지 않게 해주는 유일한 빛입니다.

지난주, 저는 여러 사람들이 자신의 “영적인 하이빔”을 켜는 모습을 보았습니다.
그들은 스스로 바른 길을 가며, 다른 이들이 그 빛을 따라오게 했습니다.

큰 아이들이 한국 청소년 수련회에 참석하는 동안,
저는 14년 전에 가르쳤던 학생들의 결혼 피로연에 초대받았습니다.
그때 그들은 제 아이들 또래의 십대였습니다.

그들이 세월 속에서도 믿음을 지켜온 모습을 보며 제 마음은 기쁨으로 가득 찼습니다.
신랑은 대학 시절 기독 동아리에서 아내를 만났고,
지금도 교회에서 리더로 섬기고 있습니다.
그들이 빛 안에서 자라온 모습은, 꺼지지 않는 하이빔의 증거였습니다.

저는 그 수련회의 리더들도 만났습니다.
그들 중 일부는 우리 교회의 옛 성도들이었습니다.
홀턴, 피츠버그, 그리고 여러 지역에서 모인 44명의 한인 청소년들을 보며 놀랐습니다.

리더들은 말했습니다.
자녀들의 영적 건강을 위해 생명처럼 헌신하고 모든 것을 희생하는 부모들이 있다고 했습니다.
부모가 “믿음”을 가장 중요한 가치로 삼았기 때문에, 자녀들도 그렇게 살게 되었습니다.
이 부모들이 하이빔을 켰기에, 한 세대가 그 길을 따라갈 수 있었습니다.

한 가지 이야기를 더 나누고 싶습니다.
허지던 교회의 앤(엄마)과 벤(6학년)은 지난 몇 년 동안 많은 어려움을 겪었습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 그들은 매일 밤 30분씩 함께 성경을 읽기로 결단했습니다.

힘든 날도 있었고, 바쁜 밤도 있었습니다.
하지만 그들은 포기하지 않았습니다.
12월 31일, 앤은 저에게 문자를 보냈습니다.
“조이스 목사님~ 우리가 해냈어요! 성경을 다 함께 읽었어요!!!”

그들의 신실함은 다른 이들을 비추는 하이빔이 되었습니다.
이제 다섯 살 마크와 여덟 살 헤이즐도 그 길을 따라가고 있습니다.
성경을 1년에 네 번 읽으시는 어머니를 보며, 
저도 올해는 영어와 한국어로 성경을 두 번 읽기로 결심하게 되었습니다. 

<600년을 비춘 하이빔>

주현절 이야기는 가장 긴 거리의 하이빔을 보여줍니다.
오늘 우리는 주현절 주일을 지킵니다.

“주현(Epiphany)”이라는 말은 헬라어 에피파네이아에서 왔으며,
“나타내다”, “드러내다”라는 뜻입니다.
이는 아기 예수로 오신 하나님께서 온 세상에 처음으로 드러난 날을 기념합니다.

전통적으로는 1월 6일이지만,
우리는 오늘 이 절기를 지키며 메시아가 한 민족만이 아니라
이방인을 포함한 모든 인류를 위해 오셨음을 기억합니다.

이 “동방박사들”은 누구였을까요?
그들은 바벨론과 페르시아 지역에서 온 박사들, 곧 제사장이며 천문학자들이었습니다.
그들은 약 1,300km 떨어진 곳에서 왔습니다.

이방인이었지만, 그들은 히브리 예언을 알고 있었습니다.
“한 별이 야곱에게서 나오리라”(민수기 24:17)는 말씀을 알고 있었고,
그 별이 만왕의 왕의 탄생을 알린다는 것도 알았습니다.

그 별이 나타나자, 그들은 망설이지 않았습니다.
하루 약 30km씩, 40일 동안 걸어야 하는 여정을 시작했습니다.
저는 오늘 여기 오기까지 40분을 운전했습니다.
그러나 그들은 예배하기 위해 40일을 걸었습니다.

그들이 어떻게 성경을 그렇게 잘 알았을까요?
많은 학자들은 다니엘을 그 이유로 봅니다.

예수님이 태어나시기 약 600년 전,
다니엘은 어린 나이에 바벨론으로 끌려갔습니다.
그의 지혜로 인해 그는 “박사들의 우두머리”(다니엘 2:48)가 되었습니다.

다니엘은 말씀의 사람이었고,
왕의 음식을 거절했으며,
하루 세 번 예루살렘을 향해 기도했고,
사자굴에서도 살아남았습니다.

그는 네 왕을 섬기며, 메시아의 때에 대한 예언을 전했습니다.
우리는 이 동방박사들을 “다니엘의 영적 후손”이라 부릅니다.
기원전 6세기에 다니엘이 켠 하이빔은
20세대를 거쳐 600년 동안 이어져
아기 예수님의 발 앞까지 그들을 인도했습니다.

다니엘의 하이빔에는 네 가지 연료가 있었습니다.
말씀, 기도, 교제, 전도입니다.

우리는 빛의 근원이 아닙니다.

우리는 그 빛을 전하는 도구일 뿐입니다. 

도구로서 우리는 영적 훈련으로 계속 빛의 근원이 되신 분과 가까이 해야 합니다. 

<우리가 하이빔을 켜야 하는 이유>

성도 여러분,
이제 우리가 하이빔을 켜야 할 때입니다.
그 이유는 세 가지입니다.

첫째, 우리 가운데 있는 새 생명 때문입니다.
지난 6개월 동안 하나님은 많은 새 영혼들을 우리 교회로 보내주셨습니다.
새 생명이 태어났습니다.
그러나 이 씨앗들이 돌보아지지 않으면, 가시덤불이나 돌밭에 떨어질 수 있습니다.
우리는 하이빔을 켜서, 새 신자들이 자라고 길을 걷는 법을 보여주어야 합니다.

둘째, 우리 공동체의 치유를 위해서입니다.
작년, 우리 마을은 큰 아픔을 겪었습니다.
패튼 화재로 13명의 주민이 집과 사업체를 잃었습니다.
그 상처는 아직도 마을의 마음에 남아 있습니다.

그러나 성탄절 이브에 우리는 다른 불을 밝혔습니다.
희망의 빛이었습니다.
우리는 교회를 열어 구호 물품을 모았습니다.
이번 달 8일, 우리는 마을 지도자들과 다른 목회자들과 만나
장기적인 회복을 논의할 것입니다.

교회 첨탑이 밤하늘을 가르듯,
하나님은 우리가 패튼의 하이빔이 되기를 부르십니다.

셋째, 날들이 점점 어두워지고 있기 때문입니다.
우리는 그리스도의 초림과 재림 사이를 살고 있습니다.
초대교회의 사명은 주님의 다시 오심을 준비하는 것이었습니다.

때로는 겨울 바람이 너무 차갑고, 구름이 너무 두껍게 느껴집니다.
우리는 불안해집니다.
그러나 해는 떠오를 것입니다.
예수님은 다시 오실 것입니다.
우리는 준비되어 있어야 합니다.

<하이빔을 켜는 방법>

다니엘에게서 배웁니다.
그는 영적 훈련의 사람이었습니다.

1. 그는 말씀을 읽었습니다.

2. 그는 기도했습니다. 생명을 걸고 하루 세 번 기도했습니다.

3. 그는 교제했습니다. 혼자 가지 않고 믿음의 형제들과 함께 갔습니다.

4. 그는 증언했습니다. 하나님을 모르는 왕들에게 빛을 전했습니다. 

다니엘은 말씀에 능통했습니다. 

다니엘은 기도를 통해 환상과 비전을 보았고, 메시아의 탄생과 앞으로의 일들을 예언했습니다.

다니엘은 세 친구들 믿음의 친구들과 함께 교제하며 믿음을 세워나갔습니다. 

다니엘은 자신들의 후손들, 학생들, 후학들에게 지식만을 가르친 것이 아니라 여호와를 경외하는 지혜를 가르치며 전도했습니다. 

1월 1일, 우리 교회에 새로운 모임이 시작되었습니다.
“레이디스 오브 페이스(Ladies of Faith)”입니다.
캐런과 헌신적인 돌봄 사역자들로 시작되었습니다.

이 여성들은 1년 동안 함께 성경을 읽기로 결단했습니다.
정말 놀랍지 않나요?
캐런이 자신의 하이빔을 켰을 때,
주변 사람들이 주님께 더 가까이 나아가게 되었습니다.

이제 각자가 자신의 길을 밝히며,
가정과 공동체 전체를 비추고 있습니다.
그들은 함께 하이빔을 켜기로 했습니다.
하나님께서 레이디스 오브 페이스를 풍성히 축복하시길 바랍니다.

오늘 저는 여러분 모두에게 도전하고 싶습니다.
나눠드린 종이에,
올해 여러분이 어떻게 하이빔을 켤 것인지 적어보세요.

말씀에 5분이나 15분을 드리겠습니까?
이웃을 위해 기도할 시간과 장소를 정하겠습니까?
소그룹 교제에 참여하겠습니까?
올해 최소 한 사람에게 복음을 전하겠습니까?

일상의 걱정이라는 “로우빔”에 만족하지 맙시다.
그리스도의 하이빔을 켭시다.
2026년의 길을 밝힙시다!
