From the Pit To the Praise
How can I keep it
inside?

<
Deep and Wide >
Dearly
beloved sisters and brothers at Wellfleet UMC, what a joy it is to be with you
today in our beautiful home of Wellfleet! Last Thursday, Charlie and Norma were
kind enough to guide my children and me around town. I fell in love with
Wellfleet’s charm—the beaches, local shops, cozy houses, and even our police
station, fire department, and elementary school. I also learned that while
people in Maine are "Mainers" and those on Cape Cod are "Cape
Codders," those born and raised here in Wellfleet are called
"Fleetiens"! Please keep teaching me about our community.
After
my first sermon last Sunday, someone encouragingly told me, "Pastor
Joyce, because you speak a little slowly, it actually helps us understand every
word much better!" Praise the Lord! I was speaking slowly because I
was nervous, but God turned it into a blessing! God always works in miraculous
ways beyond our barriers, and I pray that same God works among us today.
Thank
you also to Charlie for sharing the song "Deep and Wide" after my
message last week and leading the children's moment with such love today. I
love worshipping with all of you like this. Worship takes the presence of the
Holy Spirit, worship leaders, and an engaged congregation. As we journey
through this first year together, I look forward to sharing who God is and who
I am, learning who you are, and listening together for who God is calling us to
be through our worship.
<
Light in the Basement >
Our
house is finally feeling like home, even with a few unpacked boxes lying
around! Because we have five energetic children in a three-bedroom home, Victor
and I set up our room downstairs in the basement. At first, going down there
felt intimidating. There were no big windows, no morning sunlight, no birds
singing—just heavy stillness. When you turn off the light, it is pitch black. However,
near the top of the wall, there is one small glass window. Early in the
morning, a single beam of bright sunlight cuts straight through that glass like
a paintbrush across a dark canvas! That tiny light fills the room so completely
that I forget about the dark basement surrounding me. It transformed a gloomy
space into a sanctuary—reminding me of Jesus, the Light of the World, and
turning my heart toward praise!
<
Joseph: From the Pit to Praise >
In
Genesis 37, we find young Joseph trapped in a very real, dark pit like our
basement. Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son, gifted with a special coat of many
colors and big dreams that his family would one day bow down to him. Naive and
prideful, he also brought bad reports about his ten older brothers. So when
Jacob sent seventeen-year-old Joseph out to check on them, his brothers'
jealousy boiled over into hatred. They grabbed Joseph, tore off his colorful
robe, and threw him into an empty pit.
Genesis
37:24 says, "Now the pit was empty; there was no water in it."
Just
hours before, Joseph had status, food, clothes, and his father's love. Now, in
the pit, there was no food, no water, no family—only cold fear, the pain of
betrayal, and the threat of death. Soon after, his brothers sold him to
Midianite traders. Joseph went from the Pit, to becoming a slave Possession
in Potiphar's house, to being falsely accused in an Egyptian Prison.
Yet,
as we know, God did not leave him there. God brought Joseph out of the dungeon
into Pharaoh's Palace, using his trial to save millions of lives from
famine. God delivered Joseph from the pit, possession, prison to the palace,
filling his life with Praise. God is the only One who can reach into our
deepest pits and bring forth a song of salvation!
<
My Story: From the Pit to Praise>
This
story is not just Joseph’s—it is my personal story, too. Encountering God is a
step-by-step journey of faith. I had my pit, possession, prison, and praise!
To
share my first encounter with God, I must tell you briefly about my father. My
father grew up in severe poverty in post-war Korea. His own father was violent,
abandoned the family, and spent all their money. As the oldest son, my father
carried a heavy burden. At age eighteen, a friend invited him to church, and
like Paul, he experienced a dramatic conversion to Jesus. He dedicated his life
to Christ and eventually became a pastor, despite severe persecution from
relatives practicing traditional shamanism.
However,
my father carried deep, unhealed trauma from his childhood. Growing up, he was
very strict and authoritarian, and as an eight-year-old girl, I struggled to
love him. I carried so much hidden anger that I kept a private notebook listing
his harsh words, hoping to expose him! Whenever I lost my temper, I kicked my
heavy wooden desk—so much so that years later, its legs completely split apart!
When
I was eight, I attended a church retreat and heard the testimony of a young
North Korean girl. She had been imprisoned and beaten because of her faith. Yet
when she was released after becoming pregnant by a prison guard, her heart was still
filled with radiant joy because she could preach the gospel again!
Her
joy blew my mind. I prayed desperately: "God, I want to know You for
myself! Give me the joy that this girl has, but I don’t know!"
As I
prayed, the Holy Spirit showed me my own heart—my anger, lies, and mean spirit.
For three days, I wept as I realized my need for a Savior. Then, I felt Jesus
wash away all my sins and give me His peace! Also, God touched my father's
heart, too. He knelt before us with tears, repented of his harshness, and asked
us to help him heal. God changed my father, and me. God saved us! The fire of
God’s love was lit in my heart that night, and it is the reason I am standing
before you today as your pastor.
<
Fanny Crosby: From the Pit to the Praise>
We
see this same grace in our faithful ancestors. One of my favorite spiritual
mentors is the famous American hymnwriter, Fanny Crosby (1820–1915). At
just six weeks old, an untreated eye infection caused by an unqualified doctor
left Fanny permanently blind. Yet at age thirty, during a revival meeting at a
Methodist church in New York, as the congregation sang Isaac Watts' hymn "Alas!
and Did My Savior Bleed," the light of Christ flooded her soul. Her
internal pit of darkness was converted into an ocean of joy!
Fanny
went on to write over 8,000 gospel hymns, including "Blessed
Assurance" and "To God Be the Glory". She once wrote:
"It
seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my
life, and I thank Him for the dispensation... I might not have sung hymns to
the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful things about
me."
Though
she lived in physical darkness, her spirit was pulled from the pit, and she
spent nearly a century filling the world with praise!
<
Happy Feet>
In
Romans 10:13–15, Paul writes: "For 'everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord will be saved.' How then will they call on him in whom they have not
believed?... As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach
the good news!'"
When
God pulls us out of our pits, that joy naturally overflows. We don't need
complicated speeches; we simply share what Jesus has done in our lives with
joy. When we do, God calls our steps "Happy Feet"—beautiful
feet that carry His peace! Paul was quoting Isaiah 52:7, describing a messenger
running to announce that victory is won. Friends, in our spiritual battles, we
are not fighting for victory; we are fighting from the victory
already won by Jesus!
<
Our Journey: From the Pit to Praise >
Where
do you find yourself standing today? Are you looking for a small beam of light
in a dark basement? Are you trapped in a pit of illness, pain, or anxiety like
Joseph? Or has God delivered you, filling your heart with a song of praise?
Whatever
pit you are facing, you do not have to stay there. Now is the time to step into
the Light and take the loving hand of Jesus Christ. Whenever I feel overwhelmed
by daily worries, I walk down to the shore here on Cape Cod. Looking at the
deep and wide ocean, God lifts my eyes off my small problems and restores my
soul to praise. May the Lord deliver you, save you, and turn your deepest pit
into a song of praise today! Amen.
(Silent
prayer)
Closing
Prayer
Let
us pray together:
O
God, You are as deep and as wide as the mighty ocean. You are the God of all
beginnings and the Lord of all completions.
You
take the painful, jagged scars left upon the sands of our lives and gently wrap
them in Your soothing waves of grace. You cover our muddy pits of sin and
sorrow with Your boundless mercy, restoring our weary souls.
Thank
You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from the deepest pit of
dark night and death. Today, we offer You our hearts, our lives, and our
praise. Send us out into our community with happy, beautiful feet to share Your
love with everyone we meet.
In
the precious and victorious name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, we pray.
Amen.

(Deep and Wide)
(Cape
(Deep

(Light in the Basement)
(Joseph: From the Pit to Praise)
(My Story: From the Pit to Praise)

(Fanny Crosby: From the Pit to the Praise)
(Fanny
Crosby, 1820–1915)
(Isaac
Watts)
(Alas!
and Did My Savior Bleed)"*를 부르던 중,
6.
(Happy Feet)
(Happy
(Our Journey: From the Pit to Praise)
