<Lorenzo Dow Baker’s Calling>

Dearly beloved sisters and brothers in Christ, every week I learn something new about Wellfleet, and I find myself falling in love with our town more and more. This week, Hannah and I visited the Wellfleet Historical Society & Museum. Thankfully, David Wright—our church pianist and the museum's curator—guided us through the historical exhibits. He explained the stories behind the old photographs, let Hannah handle an authentic cannonball, and allowed her to ring the ship bells not just once, but over and over again! She even had a wonderful time playing with real pirate treasure artifacts.

In Memory of Lorenzo Dow Baker

Most of all, I learned about a remarkable man who deeply impacted Wellfleet and, ultimately, the entire world: Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker. Captain Baker was a sea captain and a devout Methodist who lived out his faith throughout his entire life. In 1870, while stopping in Jamaica, he discovered yellow bananas, purchased a cargo load, and brought them back to the United States. That marked the first commercial introduction of bananas to the modern world!

Before Captain Baker, Wellfleet struggled economically because the local fishing industry was declining. But through his entrepreneurial vision, he transformed our town by establishing shipping lines, local businesses, hotels, and transportation networks. He hired Jamaican workers, treated them with exceptional fairness and dignity, and even welcomed several young Jamaicans into his home to raise and mentor them in business and faith.

In fact, Joan from our congregation lived in Jamaica during her childhood because her father worked alongside Captain Baker! I would love to hear more of those stories.

Captain Baker loved God and loved people. He generously shared his blessings—even hanging bunches of fresh bananas on his porch so that anyone in town who was hungry could freely take one. He also helped build our church sanctuary. If you look closely at our stained-glass windows, you will actually see bananas crafted into the glass to honor his legacy! Children, after the service, see if you can spot the banana in the stained glass!

Today, Captain Baker's former home sits right next door to Charlie and Merilyn's house. His life shows us the extraordinary impact of a single person who answers God's call—saving not only himself and his family, but transforming an entire community.

<Joseph’s Calling>

In the Bible today, we encounter another extraordinary man who followed God's calling: Joseph.

As we know, Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son. At seventeen, he received prophetic dreams about a calling to lead and rule. Yet, at that age, he was also naive and prideful. His ten older brothers—grown men, some old enough to be his father (Judah already had grown sons at the time)—resented him deeply. Though Joseph was called by God to be a leader who would save his people, that calling seemed completely crushed when his brothers sold him into slavery. His circumstances grew even worse when he was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into an Egyptian prison. For thirteen long years, Joseph’s life seemed to be spiraling downhill. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us:"The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man... the Lord was with him and showed him steadfast love." (Genesis 39:2, 21)

Finally, Joseph’s long night of the soul came to an end. After interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams, he was elevated from prisoner to second-in-command over all Egypt. Twenty-two years after his brothers sold him into slavery, a severe famine drove them to Egypt to beg for food. When Joseph recognized them, he responded not with vengeance, but with overwhelming forgiveness and love. He wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him. He made himself completely vulnerable, revealing his true identity: "I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt!"

His brothers were terrified and dismayed in his presence. But Joseph gently invited them closer, easing their guilt: "Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life." (Genesis 45:5)

There was no rebuke, no condemnation, no bitterness—only pure compassion. Joseph realized that his childhood dream was not about personal pride, but about God's plan to save lives. Through thirteen years of trial as a slave and prisoner, Joseph's title changed repeatedly, but God’s calling on his life never changed.

Joseph then arranged for his father Jacob, his brothers, and their entire households to move to Goshen, the finest land in Egypt. He kissed his brothers, wept over them, and reconciled with them completely. This aligns perfectly with our second reading today in Romans 11:29: "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."

The Greek word for "gifts" here is charisma—undeserved grace freely given by God. The word for "calling" is klesis—God’s sovereign invitation to salvation and purpose. Just as God never revoked His covenant promise to Israel despite their wanderings, God never revokes His promise of salvation for us.

While our daily professions and life circumstances differ, our primary calling is universal: to receive God's unchanging promise of salvation and share His love with the world.

<My Calling>

There was a time in my own life when I deeply questioned my calling. As I shared last week, when I was eight years old, I spent three days weeping in repentance and experienced a dramatic encounter with Jesus. That night, God lit a fire in my heart for the Gospel, giving me a passion to see lives transformed by Christ. Driven by that purpose, I studied philosophy, psychology, and pastoral counseling. In 2008, I married Victor, moved to the United States, and enrolled in the Master of Divinity program. However, as Victor and I served together as youth pastors while balancing full-time studies, our family began to grow. Soon, I stepped back from active ministry to stay home and care for our children while Victor pursued ordination as an elder.

At first, this transition was painfully difficult. We struggled with questions about my career, ministry direction, and parenting. But as Victor and I prayed together, I felt God showing me that, for that season, building and nurturing our home was my primary ministry. For my ambitious self, that was a hard truth to accept. Yet I chose to obey. That season of mothering and supporting my husband lasted for fifteen years. There were days when I folded laundry and changed diapers with tears streaming down my face. I would cry out to God: "Lord, if You were going to make me a stay-at-home mother, why did You place such a burning passion for the Gospel in my heart? Why give me a calling if I cannot use it in public ministry?"

During those fifteen years, my titles kept changing: Student, Pastor’s Wife, Ordained Candidate, Children’s Director, Missionary, and Mother. But during that quiet season, God met me just as He met Joseph. He gently spoke to my heart: "Your titles may change, but the calling I placed on your life has never changed for a single moment."

God freed me from being defined by institutional titles. He showed me that ministry happens wherever He places us.

So, I began reaching out to other young mothers in our community. We started a mid-week "Mom & Me" program to teach children the Gospel, pray through parenting struggles, and study God's Word together. Local churches without children's ministries began joining us, which eventually grew into a community-wide Ecumenical Vacation Bible School uniting several local churches.

Later, when Victor was appointed to Houlton, Maine, he served two churches. Unexpectedly, a neighboring church lost its pastor. When the District Superintendent asked if I could assist, our two congregations lovingly commissioned me as a missionary to pastor that congregation.

A year later, another neighboring church in Patten had been without a pastor for two and a half years. Once again, all three congregations sent me with tears and prayers to serve as their pastor.

Managing four churches alongside five energetic children was challenging. During the week, we led women’s Bible studies, after-school programs, and pastoral visitations. On weekends, our family led worship services across multiple locations and hosted nursing home ministries, often attending two or three worship services every Sunday! Yet God worked marvelously. The four churches formed a deep bond of love and unity, establishing a collaborative leadership structure that allowed a single pastor to succeed us and care for all four congregations together. Hallelujah!

In his book The Call, Os Guinness writes: "We are not primarily called to do something or go somewhere; we are called to Someone. We are not called first to special work, but to God... Calling is the key to tracing the storyline of our lives and unriddling the meaning of our existence in a chaotic world."

God never calls us solely for our own benefit. An individual calling always matures into a collective, communal blessing. Abraham was called individually, yet his calling birthed a family of faith for all nations. Joseph was called individually, yet his life saved all of Egypt and his entire family. Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker was called individually, yet his faith revitalized Wellfleet and touched lives across the globe.

< Our Calling>

Today, God is calling us once again. He is restoring our sense of purpose and breathing His unchanging promise of salvation into our hearts.

Our individual expressions of ministry may look different depending on where we live, work, and serve, but our core calling remains one and the same: to receive God's love, to reflect His grace, and to participate in His saving work for all humanity.

God is actively looking for another Lorenzo Dow Baker right here in Wellfleet—someone who knows the depth of God's love and uses their life to bring hope and salvation to others. My prayer is that you and I will answer that call together.

Closing Prayer

Lord, You who call us so softly and tenderly, we open our ears to hear Your voice today.

To those who have never felt a sense of divine purpose, ignite in their hearts a burning desire to live for You. To those who once received Your call but have grown weary under the heavy storms of life, breathe fresh strength into their spirits today.

And to those who are faithfully walking in Your purpose, grant wisdom, humility, and a love that transcends self. Use us together to kindle a spiritual revival of purpose and hope here in Wellfleet.

In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen.

<요셉의 사명>

<나의 사명>

<우리의 사명>
