< The Beach in Wellfleet >

Dear beloved sisters and brothers in Christ, fter last week’s sermon, some of our children tried to find bananas in our stained glass windows! Did any of you manage to find one? It is wonderful to remember Lorenzo Dow Baker, who helped save our town through the banana trade and built this beautiful church. I recently learned that his daughter donated our grand piano, which was restored 15 years ago. Through it, we remain connected to the faithful Methodists who came before us.

With Joan at her art gallery

              Newcomb Hollow Beach at Wellfleet

This past week, Joan shared stories of her childhood in Jamaica and reflected on her journey through her artwork. As she reminded us—Cape Cod truly is an art colony! Our family also witnessed God’s artwork firsthand at Newcomb Hollow Beach with Norma and Robbie’s family. Cooking hot dogs over the fire pit and playing with clay from the cliffs made the day even more delightful. I could not help but thank God for giving us a small taste of heaven on earth!

However, we also learned about the dangers of rip currents. I was deeply saddened to hear about the accident last week where a woman was pulled in by the waves. Hearing that brought back a vivid memory from my own childhood. When I was young, I lost my balance in the surf and felt myself spinning 360 degrees, watching the water swirl around me. Fortunately, it wasn't too deep and adults were nearby to help, but I still remember the sheer panic of realizing I could drown. Another time, I stepped into a sudden drop-off and struggled to stay afloat. I waved frantically to my father in the distance for help—but he thought I was just waving a friendly hello and waved right back! When God graciously spared my life and my feet touched solid ground again, the relief was indescribable. Have you ever experienced a moment like that—a time when you faced near-death panic? Even if it wasn't in physical water, many of us have felt like we were drowning under the weight of health struggles, financial hardship, broken relationships, or academic pressure.

Throughout Scripture, "water" carries profound spiritual meaning. Today, as we look at the waters in the life of Moses, I want to share the "waters" of my own life and prepare our hearts for the waters God is inviting us to step into together.

< Moses’ Water of Death and Life >

Preaching is always a blessing because God always has a word for us, but this week was especially remarkable. My M.Div assignment happened to be on the birth of Moses—the exact same text as this week’s Lectionary! The more I studied, the more amazed I was by the depth hidden in a story we’ve heard since Sunday school, and how beautifully the Old and New Testaments meet in a single theme.

Theologian Helms poses a fascinating question: "How many times was Moses born?" Through Conceptual Metaphor Theory, he suggests that water in Moses' story serves as a central metaphor—holding death and life, destruction and salvation, despair and hope all at once.

Moses was born during a dark era under a new Pharaoh who knew nothing of Joseph. Fearing the rapid growth of the Israelites, Pharaoh secretly ordered the midwives to kill all Hebrew baby boys. But the midwives feared God more than Pharaoh and refused. Exposed by his own fear, Pharaoh then issued a public decree: every newborn Hebrew boy was to be thrown into the Nile River. This fear became real for everyone. Egyptian people were forced to kill baby boys, while Hebrew parents lived in constant fear. But in the middle of this hopeless time, Jochebed gave birth to Moses. The very first water Moses met was the water of his birth, but it was also the dangerous water of death. From his very first breath, Moses was born into danger.

Jochebed could not bear to let her child perish. She hid him for three months, and when she could hide him no longer, she crafted a basket out of papyrus, waterproofed it with tar and pitch, and set him floating on the Nile. Her love was not merely emotional; it was wise and proactive.

Yet humanly speaking, placing Moses on the Nile was an act of surrender—it was as though she had already lost her son. But then, another act of maternal care emerged. Miriam, Moses’ sister, watched from a distance. When Pharaoh’s daughter discovered the basket, Miriam stepped forward with immense courage, offering to find a Hebrew nurse. As a result, Moses was returned to his own mother to be nursed and raised. God restored the child to the mother who had given him up. Pharaoh’s daughter played a crucial role as well. Knowing he was a Hebrew child, she took pity on him. Defying her father’s wicked decree, she saved the baby and adopted him, naming him Moses—meaning "drawn out of the water." The Nile transformed from a place of death into a gateway to new life. Moses gained a new identity and a new future. As Exodus 2:10 tells us: "When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son."

This story connects to the Red Sea. Just like baby Moses was saved from the water, the Israelites were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the sea. But God parted the waters and saved them, changing them from slaves into His chosen people.

This same story leads to baptism. Going into the water means leaving our old, sinful life behind; coming out means starting a new life with Jesus. When Jesus was baptized, God’s voice said, "This is my beloved Son." Through His death and resurrection, Jesus opens the way for us to become God's children too. We are no longer slaves to fear, but loved children who can call God "Abba, Father!

< My Waters of Death and Life >

Like Moses, I have encountered moments in my life where I felt overwhelmed by deep waters, and each time, God miraculously delivered me. My first "water" occurred right after I was born. My father was a seminary student, and my mother was a schoolteacher in a rural village. Because they had no childcare, my mother kept me in a room next to her classroom. Every 50 minutes, when the bell rang, she would rush over during her 10-minute break to nurse me. In His grace, God sent a neighbor—an angelic elderly woman—to help care for me so I could survive and thrive.

My second "water" came when I became a mother of five young children in a rural town, far from family, supporting my husband through busy ministry and studies. Exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, I happened to listen to the song "Jochebed’s Song." I felt the unbearable weight Jochebed carried when she realized she could no longer protect her child in her own strength. I wept for hours holding my children, surrendering them to the Lord. In that moment, I was reborn—no longer an anxious mother consumed by burden, but a faithful steward trusting God as the true parent of my children.

My third "water" was our family's "Red Sea" experience shortly after being appointed to Houlton. For three to four years, we endured intense hardship that felt overwhelming day after day. Yet God parted those waters, bringing healing and transforming us into a family that transcended barriers of race, language, and culture. An orthopedic surgeon once asked me: "Joyce, I can’t bring myself to believe that God parted the Red Sea. How do you explain it?" I replied: "I cannot prove it scientifically, but I have experienced God parting the Red Sea in my own life."

< Our Waters of Death and Life >

Now, God is calling us into new waters together. He calls us to the waters of Wellfleet to lay down our fears, our old habits, and our self-centeredness, and to rise fully as His beloved children. Romans 12 calls us to offer our lives as living sacrifices—holy and pleasing to God—which is our true spiritual worship.

When I prayed, "Lord, what can I do here?", God brought "Jochebed’s Song" back to my heart with this gentle reminder:

"Place the prayer requests of My people into a small basket made of your love and prayers, and float it to Me. I will be their Master and Owner. I will care for them, raise them up like Moses, and lead them across their Red Seas."

It is my earnest prayer that our community will die to all fear and rise together in vibrant, unwavering faith. Amen.

Song of Jochebed

A reed basket so small
coated with pitch and tar
to protect from the water seeping in

Oh, what could have been her thoughts as
the tears were falling down
from her eyes flowing endlessly

With his very round eyes
his mother in his gaze
closed the basket as she kissed him
setting it afloat upon the river bank

surely praying with all her heart
As the basket sways away
gently adrift
flowing down the stream
wondering where it goes

Even with her eyes closed
she could see the face of her child
she must have wept
falling to the ground

There's a master of your life
The true parent in your life is God
Your father, whom I entrust you in His hands

The true owner of your life
He's the Lord who guides you
Into the hands of God
I commit your life, my child

He is the one who will save you
He is the one who will guide you
He is the one who will use you
He is the One God's leading you

(Wellfleet UMC)
