What Clothes Do You Need?

Dear beloved sisters and brothers in Christ, last Thursday, I had three meetings back-to-back with three children. Thankfully, they had a great time with Jade while Corey was working. After those busy meetings, I promised them some fun. Before we went to the beach, the first thing we did was change our clothes. We packed swimsuits, hats, a boogie board, a life jacket, bare feet, and—thank God—the clouds gave us some shade. We need the right clothes for the right season and the right place. What a blessing to go to the beach right after meetings!

Today is the first Sunday of September. For our children, it is the last Sunday of summer before school begins. For our church, we are beginning a new season of ministry after the summer break. And for many of us, life itself brings new seasons: changes in health, age, family, work, birth, and death. So I want to ask you: What clothes do you need for your new season of life?

 

Paul’s Pick: The Armor of God

Before choosing clothes, we need to know where we are going and what we will face. In Houlton, we needed clothes for skiing, sledding, and skating. Here on Cape Cod, we need swimsuits, hats, and sunscreen. Paul tells us that the Christian life also requires special clothing. Life on this earth is not always an easy picnic. We face a spiritual battle. First Peter 5:8 warns us that our enemy, the devil, is like “a roaring lion” looking for someone to devour.

Richard Rohr describes five hard truths we must face as we grow spiritually: life is hard; we are not as important as we think; life is not all about us; we are not in control; and we are going to die. These truths are hard, but they help us live honestly before God.

Paul says in Romans 13:11–14, “The hour has already come for you to wake up.” The night is almost over, and the day is near. So we are to put away the works of darkness and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to wear the clothes of Christ, the source of light.

 

Be Strong in the Lord : Ephesians 6 gives us the same message. Paul says, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Notice that Paul does not say, “Be strong by yourself.” Our strength comes from the Lord. Paul tells us to stand firm again and again. He says that our struggle is not only against what we can see. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against… the spiritual forces of evil.” We live in a world where an unseen spiritual battle is real. So Paul says: Put on the full armor of God.

The Belt of Truth: First, put on the belt of truth. Roman soldiers wore a loose tunic. It was comfortable when resting, but before battle they tightened it with a belt so they could move freely. The belt restricted the loose cloth, but that restriction gave them freedom to fight.

The Greek word for truth is aletheia. It means truth, honesty, what is genuine, dependable, and real. Jesus says in John 8:32, “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

The devil always tries to deceive us. He did this with Eve. He made her question God’s love. And he still whispers to us: “You will not fit in at your new school. You will have no friends. You cannot handle this new season.”

But we answer with truth. God is with us. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has plans for our future and our hope. Romans 8:6 says that the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. We can tighten the loose clothes of fear with the truth of Christ.

The Breastplate of Righteousness: Second, Paul tells us to put on the breastplate of righteousness. A soldier’s breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart.” We cannot protect our hearts simply by thinking harder. Sometimes the more we worry, the more confused and anxious we become. But we can place our hearts inside God’s righteousness. Second Corinthians 5:21 says that in Christ we become “the righteousness of God.” Our security is not based on how perfect we are. It is based on what Christ has done for us. When guilt, shame, and fear attack our hearts, we can say, “I belong to Christ. My worth is not decided by my success or failure. My heart is covered by his righteousness.”

Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Third, Paul tells us to put on our feet “the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” The word readiness points to being prepared and ready to move.

A soldier needs good shoes to stand, march, and move quickly. We also need the right shoes for our Christian journey. Isaiah says, “How beautiful… are the feet of those who bring good news.”

The gospel brings true peace. Peace does not mean avoiding every difficult conversation. Jesus himself overturned the tables in the temple when God’s house was being misused. Biblical peace means making things right, seeking truth, and bringing people back to God. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. When we wear the gospel of peace, we are ready to carry his good news wherever God sends us.

The Shield of Faith: Fourth is the shield of faith. Unlike the other pieces of armor that stay on the body, a shield is picked up and used when needed. Paul says the shield can extinguish the “flaming arrows” of the evil one. Satan shoots arrows of accusation, fear, doubt, and shame. If those arrows bring us down, we may stop moving forward. A father once came to Jesus asking him to heal his child. Jesus called him to faith, and the father cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” This is a beautiful prayer for all of us. We need to pray for faith. And our shields can protect one another. When one person is weak, another person can stand beside them. I call this intercessory prayer. We do not fight alone.

The Helmet of Salvation: Fifth is the helmet of salvation. We put helmets on children when they ride bikes, and we wear them on motorcycles because the head must be protected. What helmet do we need? We need the confidence of salvation. Habakkuk says that even if the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, he will still rejoice in God his Savior. That is the confidence of salvation. We may lose many things, but we have not lost everything if we still have Christ. A person may appear to have nothing and yet possess everything because God is their Savior and Lord.

The Sword of the Spirit: Finally, Paul gives us one offensive weapon: the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The other pieces mainly protect us. The sword helps us move forward. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes from hearing, and hearing comes through the word of Christ.

Without Scripture, we may only survive the attacks. But with God’s Word, we can answer lies with truth and temptation with God’s promises. This is why we read Scripture in the morning, study it together, worship every Sunday, and keep asking what Jesus teaches. When we put on the full armor of God, we are prepared for spiritual battle. And this battle is not fought alone. God calls us into a people, a church, a community. We each put on our own armor, but we also stand together.

 

  

 

The Armor God Has Already Given This Church

This week, through Dwight Estey’s history of our church, I saw another kind of “clothing” God has given this congregation: our church building and stained-glass windows. The church was rebuilt in about a year and a half. L. D. Baker helped bring lumber from Maine by ship, but Dwight reminded us of something very important: L. D. Baker did not rebuild this church by himself. About 250 people gave money—some gave $2, and some gave thousands of dollars. Even people who were not members of the church helped. This church was rebuilt by an entire community!

By 1898, the first stained-glass windows were installed. They were not made simply to look beautiful; they were meant to bring light and warmth into the sanctuary. Dwight also told us about Nehemiah Somes Hopkins, a Methodist missionary and the brother of L. D. Baker’s wife. Hopkins served in China for more than fifty years and helped establish a Western-style hospital near Beijing. People from Wellfleet supported that mission, and his story reminds us that the faith of this small church reached far beyond Wellfleet. No one knows exactly who designed this church, but many people feel that it looks like a ship. That fits Wellfleet so well—a town shaped by the sea. When the church was rebuilt, the local fishing industry had declined, and some shipbuilders were out of work. Perhaps their skilled hands helped shape this sanctuary. God has already clothed our church in the spirit of community, a rich historical legacy, the power of the Holy Spirit, and a mission that reaches far beyond our local area out into the world.

So let me ask you again: Do you believe that we live in a spiritual battle? Do you believe that we need the full armor of God to stand firm? Do you believe that God has called us together as one body, one church, one people, to stand and serve together still? I have prepared a small gift of the armor of God for our students today. My prayer is that they will remember these six pieces throughout this school year: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. May they put on the truth of Jesus and refuse lies. May they guard their hearts with God’s righteousness. May they wear the shoes of the gospel and bring peace. May they carry the shield of faith through prayer. May they protect their minds with the joy and confidence of salvation. And above all, may they read, study, remember, and live by God’s Word. And this is not only for our children. It is for all of us. As we begin this new season, I pray that Wellfleet UMC will continue to be a place where Christ’s light shines through many different people. May we remember those who built this church before us, and may we become faithful builders for those who will come after us.

Augustine once wandered far from God. One day, he heard the words of Romans 13 and understood that he needed to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” His life changed. The wanderer became Saint Augustine, a faithful servant of Christ. May we also put on Christ. May we wake up. May we stand firm. May we walk in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and God’s Word. And may we faithfully finish the race God has given us.

여러분에게는 어떤 옷이 필요한가요?

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 지난 목요일 저는 세 명의 아이들과 연속으로 세 번의 모임을 가졌습니다. 코리가 일하는 동안 다행히 아이들은 제이드와 함께 즐거운 시간을 보냈지요. 바쁜 모임이 끝난 후, 저는 아이들에게 재미있는 시간을 선사하겠다고 약속했습니다. 해변으로 가기 전 우리가 가장 먼저 한 일은 옷을 갈아입는 것이었습니다. 수영복, 모자, 보드, 구명조끼를 챙겼고, 맨발로 나섰으며—감사하게도 (선크림을 가져가지 않았지만) 구름이 그늘을 만들어 주었습니다. 우리는 적절한 계절과 장소에 맞는 옷이 필요합니다. 모임을 마치고 곧바로 해변으로 갈 수 있다니 얼마나 큰 축복인가요!

 

오늘은 9월의 첫 번째 주일입니다. 우리 아이들에게는 개학 전 여름의 마지막 주일이고, 우리 교회에게는 여름 휴가를 마치고 새로운 사역의 계절을 시작하는 날입니다. 그리고 우리 중 많은 이들에게 삶 자체가 새로운 계절을 가져다줍니다. 건강, 나이, 가정, 직장, 출생과 죽음의 변화들이 찾아오지요. 그래서 여러분께 묻고 싶습니다. 여러분 삶의 새로운 계절을 위해 어떤 옷이 필요하신가요?

바울의 추천: 하나님의 전신갑주

옷을 선택하기 전에, 우리는 우리가 어디로 가고 있는지, 그리고 어떤 상황에 맞닥뜨릴지 알아야 합니다. 홀턴(Houlton)에서는 스키, 썰매, 스케이트를 탈 옷이 필요했습니다. 여기 케이프코드에서는 수영복, 모자, 선크림이 필요하지요. 바울은 그리스도인의 삶 역시 특별한 옷이 필요하다고 말합니다. 이 땅에서의 삶은 언제나 편안한 소풍 같지만은 않습니다. 우리는 영적 전쟁에 직면해 있습니다. 베드로전서 5장 8절은 우리의 원수 마귀가 “우는 사자”같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾고 있다고 경고합니다.

 

리처드 로어(Richard Rohr) 신부는 우리가 영적으로 성장하면서 받아들여야 할 다섯 가지 엄연한 진리를 설명합니다:

1. 삶은 어렵다.

 

2. 나는 내가 생각하는 것만큼 중요하지 않다.

 

3. 삶은 나 중심이 아니다.

 

4. 나는 모든 것을 통제할 수 없다.

 

5. 우리는 모두 죽는다.

 

이 진리들은 받아들이기 쉽지 않지만, 우리가 하나님 앞에서 정직하게 살아가도록 도와줍니다.

 

바울은 로마서 13장 11–14절에서 *“너희가 이 시기를 알거니와 자다가 깰 때가 벌써 되었으니”*라고 말합니다. 밤이 깊고 낮이 가까웠으니, 어둠의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷, 곧 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입어야 합니다. 빛의 근원이신 그리스도의 옷을 입어야 하는 것입니다.

주 안에서 강건해지십시오

에베소서 6장도 우리에게 동일한 메시지를 전합니다. 바울은 *“주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지고”*라고 권면합니다. 바울이 “너희 스스로 강해져라”고 말하지 않았음에 주목하십시오. 우리의 힘은 주님으로부터 옵니다. 바울은 거듭하여 담대히 서라고 말합니다. 우리의 싸움은 눈에 보이는 것만을 향한 것이 아닙니다. “우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요… 악의 영들을 상대함이라.” 우리는 눈에 보이지 않는 영적 전쟁이 실재하는 세상에 살고 있습니다. 그러므로 바울은 선포합니다. 하나님의 전신갑주를 입으십시오.

• 진리의 허리띠: 로마 군사들은 헐렁한 튜닉(통옷)을 입었습니다. 쉬고 있을 때는 편했지만, 전투에 나서기 전에는 자유롭게 움직이기 위해 허리띠를 매어 옷을 죘습니다. 허리띠는 헐렁한 옷을 매어주었지만, 그 제한 덕분에 싸울 수 있는 자유를 얻었습니다. 진리를 뜻하는 희랍어 단어는 *알레테이아(aletheia)*로, 진실함, 정직함, 참되고 신뢰할 수 있는 실재를 의미합니다. 예수님께서는 요한복음 8장 32절에서 *“진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라”*고 말씀하셨습니다. 마귀는 언제나 우리를 속이려 합니다. 하와에게 하나님의 사랑을 의심하게 만들었던 것처럼, 지금도 우리에게 속삭입니다. “새 학교에서 적응하지 못할 거야. 친구도 없을걸. 넌 이 새로운 계절을 견뎌내지 못해.” 하지만 우리는 진리로 답합니다. 하나님이 우리와 함께하십니다. 예레미야 29장 11절은 하나님이 우리를 향한 미래와 희망의 계획을 가지고 계심을 상기시켜 줍니다. 로마서 8장 6절은 성령의 생각은 생명과 평안이라고 말합니다. 우리는 두려움이라는 헐렁한 옷을 그리스도의 진리로 굳게 매어 맬 수 있습니다.

 

• 의의 호심경(가슴받이): 군사의 호심경은 심장과 주요 장기를 보호했습니다. 잠언 4장 23절은 *“모든 지킬 만한 것 중에 더욱 네 마음을 지키라”*고 권면합니다. 우리는 단순히 생각을 더 많이 한다고 해서 마음을 지킬 수 없습니다. 때로는 걱정을 할수록 더 혼란스럽고 불안해지지요. 하지만 우리의 마음을 하나님의 의 안에 둘 수 있습니다. 고린도후서 5장 21절은 그리스도 안에서 우리가 *“하나님의 의”*가 된다고 말씀합니다. 우리의 안전은 우리가 얼마나 완벽한가에 달려 있지 않습니다. 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 행하신 일에 기초합니다. 죄책감, 수치심, 두려움이 우리의 마음을 공격할 때 우리는 이렇게 선포할 수 있습니다. “나는 그리스도의 것이다. 나의 가치는 나의 성공이나 실패로 결정되지 않는다. 내 마음은 그분의 의로 덮여 있다.”

 

• 평안의 복음의 신: 바울은 발에 *“평안의 복음이 준비한 것으로 신을 신으라”*고 말합니다. '준비'라는 단어는 이동할 준비가 되어 있고 정돈된 상태를 가리킵니다. 군사가 서고, 행군하고, 신속하게 움직이려면 좋은 신발이 필요하듯, 우리도 그리스도인의 여정을 위한 올바른 신발이 필요합니다. 이사야 선지자는 *“좋은 소식을 전하는 자들의 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가”*라고 외쳤습니다. 복음은 참된 평화를 가져옵니다. 평화란 모든 어려운 대화를 피하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 예수님께서도 하나님의 집이 오용될 때 성전의 상을 엎으셨습니다. 성경적 평화란 바로잡고, 진리를 구하며, 사람들을 하나님께로 돌이키는 것입니다. 예수님은 평강의 왕이시며, 우리가 평안의 복음의 신을 신을 때 하나님이 보내시는 곳 어디든 그분의 기쁜 소식을 전할 준비가 됩니다.

 

• 믿음의 방패: 몸에 착용하고 있는 다른 갑주의 조각들과 달리, 방패는 필요할 때 들어 올려 사용하는 것입니다. 바울은 이 방패가 악한 자의 *“불화살”*을 끌 수 있다고 말합니다. 사탄은 비난, 두려움, 의심, 수치심의 불화살을 쏘아댑니다. 그 화살에 맞아 쓰러지면 우리는 더 이상 앞으로 나아가지 못할 수 있습니다. 한 아버지가 아이를 고쳐달라며 예수님께 나왔을 때, 예수님께서 믿음을 요구하시자 아버지는 *“내가 믿나이다 나의 믿음 없는 것을 도와 주소서!”*라고 부르짖었습니다. 이것은 우리 모두를 위한 아름다운 기도입니다. 우리는 믿음을 위해 기도해야 하며, 우리의 방패로 서로를 보호할 수 있습니다. 한 사람이 약해질 때 다른 사람이 곁에 함께 서 줄 수 있습니다. 저는 이것을 중보기도라고 부릅니다. 우리는 혼자 싸우지 않습니다.

 

• 구원의 투구: 아이들이 자전거를 타거나 오토바이를 탈 때 머리를 보호하기 위해 투구를 씌웁니다. 우리에게는 어떤 투구가 필요할까요? 바로 구원의 확신입니다. 하박국 선지자는 무화과나무가 무성하지 못하고 포도나무에 열매가 없을지라도, 여전히 구원의 하나님으로 말미암아 즐거워하겠다고 고백합니다. 그것이 바로 구원의 확신입니다. 우리는 많은 것을 잃을 수 있지만, 그리스도가 계시다면 모든 것을 잃은 것이 아닙니다. 겉으로는 아무것도 없는 것 같아 보일지라도, 하나님이 나의 구원과 주님이 되시기에 모든 것을 소유한 사람입니다.

 

• 성령의 검: 마지막으로 바울은 유일한 공격 무기인 성령의 검, 곧 하나님의 말씀을 줍니다. 다른 조각들은 주로 우리를 보호하지만, 검은 앞으로 나아가도록 돕습니다. 로마서 10장 17절은 믿음은 들음에서 나며 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암았다고 말합니다. 말씀이 없다면 우리는 공격을 견뎌내는 데 그칠지 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님의 말씀이 있다면 진리로 거짓에 답하고, 하나님의 약속으로 시험을 물리칠 수 있습니다. 이것이 우리가 아침마다 성경을 읽고, 함께 공부하며, 주일마다 예배드리고, 예수님의 가르침을 계속 구하는 이유입니다. 하나님의 전신갑주를 입을 때 우리는 영적 전쟁을 치를 준비가 됩니다. 그리고 이 싸움은 혼자 하는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리를 하나의 백성, 하나의 교회, 하나의 공동체로 부르셨습니다. 우리는 각자 자신의 갑주를 입지만, 함께 서서 싸웁니다.

 

하나님께서 이미 이 교회에 주신 갑주

이번 주 드와이트 에스티(Dwight Estey) 집사님이 정리해 주신 우리 교회의 역사를 통해, 저는 하나님께서 이 성도들에게 주신 또 다른 종류의 “옷”을 보았습니다. 바로 우리의 예배당 건물과 스테인드글라스 창문입니다.

 

우리 교회가 다시 재건되는 데는 약 1년 반이 걸렸습니다. L. D. 베이커(L. D. Baker) 씨가 배로 메인(Maine)주에서 목재를 가져오는 데 큰 도움을 주었지만, 드와이트 집사님은 매우 중요한 사실을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 베이커 씨 혼자서 이 교회를 다시 지은 것이 아니라는 점입니다. 약 250명의 사람들이 헌금했습니다. 어떤 이들은 2달러를 냈고, 어떤 이들은 성금 수천 달러를 내놓았습니다. 심지어 교인이 아닌 지역 주민들까지 손을 보탰습니다. 이 교회는 지역사회 전체의 손으로 다시 세워진 것입니다!

 

1898년에 이르러 첫 스테인드글라스 창문들이 설치되었습니다. 단순히 아름답게 보이기 위해 만들어진 것이 아니라, 예배당 안에 빛과 따스함을 가져다주기 위한 것이었습니다. 드와이트 집사님은 L. D. 베이커 씨 부인의 남동생이자 감리교 선교사였던 네헤미야 소메스 홉킨스(Nehemiah Somes Hopkins)에 대해서도 이야기해 주었습니다. 홉킨스 선교사는 50년 넘게 중국에서 섬기며 베이징 근처에 서양식 병원을 세우는 데 기여했습니다. 웰플릿의 성도들이 그 선교 사역을 후원했고, 그의 이야기는 이 작은 교회의 믿음이 웰플릿의 경계를 넘어 멀리까지 닿았음을 일깨워 줍니다.

 

이 교회를 정확히 누가 설계했는지는 아무도 모르지만, 많은 이들이 건물이 배 모양을 닮았다고 느낍니다. 바다와 함께 살아온 웰플릿 마을에 참 잘 어울리는 모습입니다. 교회가 재건될 당시, 지역 어업이 침체되어 일자리를 잃은 조선소 목수들이 있었습니다. 어쩌면 그 숙련된 손길들이 이 예배당을 지어 올리는 데 쓰였을지도 모릅니다. 하나님께서는 이미 우리 교회를 공동체의 영성, 풍성한 역사적 유산, 성령의 능력, 그리고 우리 지역을 넘어 세계로 향하는 선교의 옷으로 입혀 주셨습니다.

 

그러므로 여러분께 다시 묻고 싶습니다. 우리가 영적 전쟁 속에 살고 있음을 믿으십니까? 견고히 서기 위해 하나님의 전신갑주가 필요함을 믿으십니까? 하나님께서 지금도 우리를 한 몸, 한 교회, 한 백성으로 부르셔서 함께 서고 섬기게 하셨음을 믿으십니까?

 

저는 오늘 우리 학생들을 위해 전신갑주의 의미를 담은 작은 선물을 준비했습니다. 저의 기도는 우리 아이들이 이번 학기 동안 이 여섯 가지 조각—진리, 의, 평안, 믿음, 구원, 그리고 하나님의 말씀—을 기억하는 것입니다. 아이들이 예수님의 진리로 옷 입고 거짓을 거절하기를 바랍니다. 하나님의 의로 마음을 지키기를 바랍니다. 평안의 복음의 신을 신기를 바랍니다. 기도를 통해 믿음의 방패를 들기를 바랍니다. 구원의 기쁨과 확신으로 생각을 지키기를 바랍니다. 무엇보다 하나님의 말씀을 읽고, 공부하고, 기억하며, 말씀대로 살아가기를 소망합니다.

 

그리고 이것은 우리 아이들만을 위한 것이 아닙니다. 우리 모두를 위한 것입니다. 이 새로운 계절을 시작하며, 웰플릿 연합감리교회가 수많은 다양한 사람들을 통해 그리스도의 빛을 계속해서 발하는 곳이 되기를 기도합니다. 우리보다 앞서 이 교회를 세운 이들을 기억하며, 우리 역시 우리 뒤에 올 이들을 위한 신실한 건축자가 되기를 소망합니다.

 

성 아우구스티누스(St. Augustine)는 한때 하나님을 떠나 방황했습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 그는 로마서 13장의 말씀을 들었고 “주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입어야” 함을 깨달았습니다. 그의 삶은 완전히 변화되었습니다. 방랑자가 그리스도의 신실한 종 성 아우구스티누스가 된 것입니다.

 

우리 역시 그리스도로 옷 입읍시다. 깨어납시다. 담대히 섭시다. 진리, 의, 평안, 믿음, 구원, 그리고 하나님의 말씀 안에서 걸어갑시다. 그리고 하나님께서 우리에게 맡기신 경주를 신실하게 완주합시다.

오 성령님이시여, 내 안에 숨 쉬소서,

 

나의 모든 생각이 거룩하여지도록.

 

오 성령님이시여, 내 안에서 역사하소서,
