Visible Hands for an Invisible God (보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 보이는 손)

Are You Feeling Overwhelmed?

Dearly beloved sisters and brothers in Christ, are you feeling overwhelmed today? Last week, Norma came up to me and asked a caring question. She said, "When I think of you, I wonder—how do you manage being a mother, a pastor’s wife, and a pastor all at once?" I could tell she was feeling overwhelmed just thinking about my life! And she’s not the only one. Many of you have told me, "I get tired just looking at your schedule!" I’m so sorry for making you feel exhausted on my behalf!

When Norma asked me that, I paused for a moment to think about how to answer. On one hand, I have to admit that I do feel overwhelmed by new school systems for three different age groups, learning multiple apps just to read school announcements, and navigating new bus routes—I'm still trying to figure out where and when the buses stop! Every morning and afternoon, I send three groups of kids off at 30-minute intervals, welcome them back at 30-minute intervals, and drive five kids to all their different sports practices. Plus, I just sent today's bulletin draft to Corey two minutes before my meeting! I will be better next week. I am still getting to know our church and our community. In that sense, yes—I am definitely in an overwhelming season. However, I can’t say that I feel overwhelmed in other way.

If you are feeling overwhelmed today, what is your situation? Perhaps aging feels very new and heavy to you. Maybe a health issue—yours or a family member’s—feels like too much to bear. Maybe starting a new school year with mountains of homework feels daunting, or maybe the news from our country and world leaves your heart heavy.

Today, we find two of the most overwhelming situations in the entire Bible—one in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament. In them, we find the answer to what we should do when life overwhelms us.

Moses’ Visible Hands for an Invisible God

We have been journeying through Exodus for a few weeks according our lectionary, and today we reach the climax: crossing the Red Sea! It’s an exciting story that many of us have read dozens of times. About 2 million Israelites—including children, elderly family members, and livestock—were escaping Egypt. But suddenly, the Egyptian army trapped them against the shores of the Red Sea. Imagine how terrified they felt! How utterly overwhelmed they were!

 

Then, a miracle happened. The Red Sea parted into two massive walls of water, leaving dry ground for the Israelites to walk across. As I re-read this famous story, my eyes focused on the relationship between Moses’ hands and God’s hands:

"Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind..." (Exodus 14:21)

"Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians..." Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place... and the Lord swept them into the sea. (vv. 26–27)

"That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians... And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant." (vv. 30–31)

Who was the Primary Actor here? The Scripture leaves no doubt: The Lord drove the sea back. The Lord swept them away. The mighty hand of the Lord was displayed. Yet, before God performed the miracle, He told Moses: "Stretch out your hand." To an outsider who didn't know God, it might have looked like Moses was the one working the miracle!

Why would Almighty God ask Moses to stretch out his hand when God was doing all the heavy lifting? Because God doesn't need our power—He desires our partnership. He could do it all alone, but He invites Moses into the miracle. Through that visible act, the people learned to trust both the invisible God and His servant Moses. Our God—the Almighty Creator and our dear Friend—works this way: The invisible God does the ultimate work, but He asks for our visible hands.

A Child’s Visible Hands for an Invisible God

In the New Testament, we see the exact same pattern in the feeding of the five thousand. This is one of only two miracles recorded in all four Gospels (the other being Jesus’ Resurrection), which shows us just how important it is. Jesus had just received the heartbreaking news that John the Baptist was killed. His disciples were exhausted, having not even had time to eat. They desperately needed rest. But a massive crowd followed them, hungry for truth and hope. Jesus, filled with compassion, did not send them away. After teaching them all day, He wanted to feed them. He said to the disciples: "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."

Philip looked at the crowd, calculated the cost, and felt completely overwhelmed: "It would take more than half a year’s wages!" They had no money, no energy, and no food. Then Andrew brought forward a young boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish. Jesus didn't dismiss this tiny offering. He took the humble gift, gave thanks, broke the bread, and handed it to the disciples to distribute. There were 5,000 men, plus women and children—likely 15,000 to 20,000 people in total! And what happened? Everyone ate until they were full, and they collected twelve baskets of leftovers! It was the largest open-air communion meal in history. Just like at the Red Sea, Jesus didn't need the boy's lunch to perform a miracle. But He invited the boy to stretch out his hands. Our God—the Almighty Creator and our dear Friend—works this way: The invisible God does the ultimate work, but He asks for our visible hands.

 

Our Visible Hands for an Invisible God

Are you feeling overwhelmed today—trapped like Israel at the Red Sea, or asked to feed a crowd with empty pockets like the disciples? How do we break free from that burden? We must proclaim that God is the Primary Actor. He initiates, accomplishes, and finishes all things.

This is His business, not ours! We simply need to stretch out our hands when God gives us the cue, offering our "five loaves and two fish"—whatever small things we have received from Him. God will take care of the rest. We cannot ruin His sovereign plans!

"Lord, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us.” Isa 26:12  

"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

                                       

Our dear friend Samantha showed us what it means to be "visible hands for an invisible God" in her testimony today. (Unbroken faith by Samantha Hayman) After her terrible car accident, she was left with two broken wrists, two pelvic fractures, and a collapsed lung, facing 8 to 10 weeks of recovery to just walk. Yet, right after the collision, she opened her mouth to speak God’s words to the driver who hit her: "I forgive you. "As Samantha confessed, those were not her own natural words, but God’s words speaking through her. Even while unable to move her body properly, she and her boyfriend Trey offered their hands to the invisible God. Trey pushes her wheelchair door-to-door so they can visit neighbors in the hospital, hold hands, share smiles, offer prayers, and share the gospel. Samantha could easily feel overwhelmed by her long healing process. But when she offers her hands—even broken hands—we see the invisible God at work!

Returning to my own story about feeling overwhelmed: cooking for a household of seven is a big task! But I have a wonderful cooking buddy—my daughter, Hannah Banana. She loves to cook with me, and I love cooking with her. Recently, Hannah helped me make Kimchi—a complex, traditional Korean dish. When we served it to others, Hannah whispered proudly to them, "I made it!"(with Mom!- (with whispering voice). I laughed so hard! It’s like the boy with the five loaves telling his friends, "I fed 5,000 people with Jesus today!"

Hannah didn't do the heavy lifting, and even when I have to clean up her little mess or fix her extra ingredients, her presence is a joy. I don't need her to be the master chef; I just want her fellowship.

When Norma asked me, "Are you overwhelmed?" I could answer, "I’m not overwhelmed—I've just been in training through overwhelming situations for years!" The ministry of this church is not my business—it is God's business. Raising children is not my business- it is God’s business. I just follow His instructions. When God says, "Stretch out your hands," I stretch them out. When He asks for my five loaves and two fish, I place them in His hands.

What hands are you being called to stretch out to God today? When we offer our small, willing hands, God lifts the overwhelming weight off our shoulders. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Starting in October, we will have a wonderful opportunity to "cook with God" together through our new Bible studies—on Thursday mornings in person, on Zoom, and during our Adult Sunday School class before worship, if we can. I am also looking for visible hands to serve in key ministries:

• A Prayer Team to pray over our church and community.
• A Visitation Team to reach out through cards, texts, and home visits.
• A Mission Team to serve local needs. I recently joined the Nauset Interfaith Association (NIA), formed 25 years ago after 9/11, where local clergy and lay leaders work together to support Cape Cod.

May God use our visible hands to part our Red Seas, to feed our hungry neighbors, and to reveal the invisible God to our world. Let us close with the famous words of

St. Teresa of Ávila:

Christ has no body now but yours,

no hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world.

Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good.

Yours are the hands through which He blesses all the world. Amen.

지금 삶의 무게에 눌려 계신가요?

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 삶의 무게에 마음이 버겁고 힘들지는 않으신가요? 지난주 노마(Norma) 성도님이 제게 다가와 따뜻한 마음으로 물으셨습니다.

“목사님을 보면 늘 궁금해요. 어떻게 엄마이자, 목사 아내이자, 담임목사로서의 역할을 그 모든 걸 동시에 다 해내고 계신가요?”

성도님은 제 삶을 떠올리는 것만으로도 마음이 버거워 보이셨습니다! 그렇게 느끼시는 분은 노마 성도님뿐만이 아닙니다. 많은 분들이 제게 “목사님 일정을 보기만 해도 내가 다 피곤해져요!”라고 말씀하시곤 합니다. 저 때문에 여러분을 피곤하게 해 드려서 정말 죄송합니다!

노마 성도님의 질문을 받고 어떻게 답변해야 할지 잠시 생각해 보았습니다. 솔직히 말씀드리면, 세 아이의 서로 다른 학교 시스템에 적응하고, 알림장을 읽으려 여러 앱을 배우고, 새로운 버스 노선을 익히느라—어디서 몇 시에 버스가 타는지 여전히 파악 중입니다—마음이 버거울 때가 있습니다. 매일 아침저녁으로 30분 간격으로 세 번 아이들을 배웅하고 맞이하며, 다섯 아이를 각기 다른 운동 연습에 바래다 주고 있습니다. 게다가 주보 원고도 모임 2분 전에야 코리(Corey)에게 겨우 보냈습니다! 다음 주에는 더 잘해 보겠습니다. 저 역시 아직 우리 교회와 지역 사회를 알아가는 중입니다. 그런 의미에서 본다면, 네—저는 분명 삶의 무게가 벅차게 느껴지는 계절을 지나고 있습니다. 하지만 다른 의미에서는 마음이 짓눌려 있다고 말할 수 없습니다.

오늘 삶의 무게에 눌려 계신다면, 여러분의 상황은 어떠하신가요? 나이 들어가는 과정이 낯설고 무겁게 느껴지실 수도 있습니다. 자신이나 가족의 건강 문제가 감당하기 힘든 짐으로 다가올 수도 있습니다. 새 학기가 시작되어 산더미 같은 과제에 지쳤거나, 나라와 세계에서 들려오는 뉴스에 마음이 무거울 수도 있습니다.

오늘 말씀에는 성경 전체를 통틀어 가장 압도적이고 절망적인 두 가지 상황이 등장합니다. 하나는 구약에, 하나는 신약에 나옵니다. 성경은 우리가 삶의 무게에 짓눌릴 때 무엇을 해야 하는지 그 답을 보여줍니다.

보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 모세의 보이는 손

우리는 지난 몇 주간 교회력(Lectionary)을 따라 출애굽기를 묵상해 왔고, 오늘 드디어 그 하이라이트인 홍해를 건너는 사건에 도달했습니다! 우리 모두가 수십 번은 읽었을 가슴 뛰는 이야기입니다. 어린아이와 노약자, 가축을 포함해 약 200만 명의 이스라엘 백성이 이집트를 탈출하고 있었습니다. 하지만 갑자기 추격해 온 이집트 군대에 막혀 홍해 해변에 갇히게 되었습니다. 그들이 느꼈을 공포와 압도적인 절망감을 상상해 보십시오!

그때 기적이 일어났습니다. 홍해가 갈라져 두 개의 거대한 물벽을 이루었고, 이스라엘 백성은 마른 땅을 밟고 건너갔습니다. 이 유명한 이야기를 다시 읽으면서, 제 시선은 모세의 손과 하나님의 손 사이의 관계에 머물렀습니다.

“모세가 바다 위로 그의 손을 내밀매, 여호와께서 큰 동풍으로 밤새도록 바닷물을 물러가게 하시니…” (출애굽기 14:21)

“네 손을 바다 위로 내밀어 물이 이집트 사람들 위에 다시 흐르게 하라… 모세가 곧 손을 바다 위로 내밀매 날이 새어 바다의 힘이 회복된지라… 여호와께서 이집트 사람들을 바다 가운데 엎드러뜨리시니” (26–27절)

“그 날에 여호와께서 이같이 이스라엘을 이집트 사람의 손에서 구원하시매… 이스라엘이 여호와께서 이집트 사람들에게 행하신 그 큰 능력을 보았으므로 백성이 여호와를 경외하며 여호와와 그의 종 모세를 믿었더라” (30–31절)

이 사건의 주역(Primary Actor)은 누구였습니까? 성경은 명확히 기록합니다. 여호와께서 바다를 물러가게 하셨고, 여호와께서 그들을 엎드러뜨리셨으며, 여호와의 큰 능력이 나타났습니다. 그런데 하나님은 기적을 행하시기 전에 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. “네 손을 내밀라.” 하나님을 알지 못하는 제3자가 보았다면, 마치 모세가 기적을 일으키는 것처럼 보였을 것입니다!

하나님께서 모든 무거운 짐을 다 지시면서, 왜 전능하신 하나님은 모세에게 손을 내밀라고 하셨을까요? 하나님은 우리의 힘이 필요해서가 아니라, 우리와의 동역(Partnership)을 원하시기 때문입니다. 하나님은 혼자서도 다 하실 수 있지만, 모세를 그 기적의 자리로 초청하셨습니다. 그 눈에 보이는 행동을 통해 백성들은 보이지 않는 하나님과 그의 종 모세를 신뢰하는 법을 배웠습니다. 전능하신 창조주이자 우리의 친밀한 친구이신 하나님은 이렇게 일하십니다. 보이지 않는 하나님께서 궁극적인 일을 행하시지만, 우리에게 보이는 손을 요구하십니다.

보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 한 아이의 보이는 손

신약성경에서도 오병이어 기적을 통해 똑같은 패턴을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 기적은 사복음서 모두에 기록된 단 두 가지 기적 중 하나입니다(다른 하나는 예수님의 부활입니다). 이는 이 사건이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여줍니다. 예수님은 세례 요한이 참수당했다는 가슴 아픈 소식을 막 접하신 참이었습니다. 제자들은 식사할 겨를도 없이 지쳐 있었고, 간절히 휴식이 필요했습니다. 하지만 진리와 희망에 목마른 거대한 무리가 그들을 따라왔습니다. 긍휼이 많으신 예수님은 그들을 돌려보내지 않으셨습니다. 하루 종일 가르치신 후 그들을 먹이고자 하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 먹을 것을 주라.”

빌립은 무리를 바라보고 계산을 해 본 뒤 완전히 질려 버렸습니다. “이 사람들을 먹이려면 반년치 임금으로도 부족합니다!” 그들에게는 돈도, 기력도, 음식도 없었습니다. 그때 안드레가 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가진 한 어린아이를 데리고 왔습니다. 예수님은 이 보잘것없는 드림을 물리치지 않으셨습니다. 그 소박한 선물을 받아 들고 감사기도를 드리신 후, 떼어 제자들에게 주어 나누어 주게 하셨습니다. 남성만 5,000명이었으니 여성과 아이들까지 합치면 아마 15,000명에서 20,000명에 달했을 것입니다! 무슨 일이 일어났습니까? 모두가 배불리 먹고도 남은 조각을 12바구니나 거두었습니다! 역사상 가장 큰 야외 성찬식이었습니다. 홍해에서와 마찬가지로, 예수님은 기적을 행하시기 위해 아이의 도시락이 반드시 필요했던 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 그 아이에게 손을 내밀도록 초청하셨습니다. 보이지 않는 하나님께서 궁극적인 일을 행하시지만, 우리에게 보이는 손을 요구하십니다.

보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 우리의 보이는 손

오늘 삶의 무게에 눌려 계신가요? 홍해 앞에 갇힌 이스라엘 백성처럼 느껴지거나, 빈 호주머니로 큰 무리를 먹여야 하는 제자들처럼 막막하신가요? 우리는 어떻게 그 짐에서 벗어날 수 있을까요? 우리는 하나님이 주역(Primary Actor)이심을 선포해야 합니다. 하나님께서 모든 일을 시작하시고, 성취하시며, 완성하십니다.

이것은 하나님의 일이지, 우리의 일이 아닙니다! 우리는 그저 하나님께서 신호를 주실 때 손을 내밀어, 우리가 받은 작은 것—우리의 ‘오병이어’—를 드리기만 하면 됩니다. 남은 일은 하나님께서 책임지십니다. 우리는 하나님의 주권적인 계획을 망칠 수 없습니다!

“여호와여, 주께서 우리를 위하여 평강을 제정하시오리니, 우리가 행한 모든 일도 주께서 우리를 위하여 행하심이니이다.” (이사야 26:12)

“너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라.” (빌립보서 1:6)

오늘 간증을 나눠 준 우리의 귀한 친구 사만다(Samantha)는 “보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 보이는 손”이 된다는 것이 무엇인지 몸소 보여 주었습니다. 사만다는 끔찍한 교통사고로 양쪽 손목과 골반 두 곳이 부러지고 폐가 손상되어, 겨우 걸을 수 있게 되기까지 8주에서 10주의 회복 기간을 앞두고 있습니다. 하지만 충돌 직후, 사만다는 입을 열어 자신을 친 운전자에게 하나님의 말씀을 전했습니다. “당신을 용서합니다.” 사만다가 고백했듯이, 그 말은 자신의 말이 아니라 사만다를 통해 말씀하시는 하나님의 언어였습니다. 몸을 제대로 움직일 수 없는 순간에도, 사만다와 그녀의 남자친구 트레이(Trey)는 보이지 않는 하나님께 자신들의 손을 내드렸습니다. 트레이는 사만다의 휠체어를 밀며 병실마다 찾아가 이웃들을 방문하고, 손을 잡고, 미소를 나누며, 기도하고 복음을 전하고 있습니다. 사만다는 긴 회복 과정에 낙심하고 짓눌릴 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 그녀가 자신의 손을—심지어 부러진 손을—내밀 때, 우리는 일하시는 보이지 않는 하나님을 보게 됩니다!

다시 제 이야기로 돌아가자면, 일곱 식구의 밥을 차리는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다! 하지만 제게는 훌륭한 요리 파트너가 있습니다. 바로 제 딸 ‘해나 바나나’입니다. 해나는 저와 함께 요리하는 것을 정말 좋아하고, 저 역시 해나와 함께 요리하는 것이 즐겁습니다. 최근에 한나가 한국의 전통 음식인 김치를 담그는 것을 도와주었습니다. 완성된 김치를 사람들에게 대접할 때, 한나는 자랑스럽게 속삭였습니다. “내가 만들었어요! (엄마랑 같이! - 속삭이는 목소리로)” 저는 얼마나 웃었는지 모릅니다! 마치 오병이어를 드린 아이가 친구들에게 “나 오늘 예수님이랑 같이 5,000명 먹였다!”라고 말하는 것과 같았습니다.

해나가 무거운 짐을 다 진 것도 아니고, 해나가 어질러 놓은 곳을 치우거나 재료를 다시 정돈해야 할 때도 있지만, 아이가 함께 있다는 사실 자체가 제게는 큰 기쁨입니다. 저는 아이가 최고의 셰프가 되기를 바라는 것이 아니라, 그저 아이와의 교제를 원하는 것입니다.

노마 성도님이 제게 “지치지 않으세요?”라고 물었을 때, 저는 이렇게 답할 수 있었습니다. “지치지 않아요. 그저 지난 몇 년간 힘든 상황들을 통해 훈련을 받아왔을 뿐이에요!” 우리 교회의 사역은 나의 일이 아니라 하나님의 일입니다. 아이들을 키우는 것도 나의 일이 아니라 하나님의 일입니다. 저는 그저 하나님의 지시를 따를 뿐입니다. 하나님께서 “손을 내밀라” 하실 때 손을 내밀고, 나의 오병이어를 요구하실 때 그것을 하나님의 손에 올려놓을 뿐입니다.

오늘 여러분은 하나님 앞에 어떤 손을 내밀도록 부름받고 계십니까? 우리가 작지만 기꺼운 손을 내밀 때, 하나님께서는 우리 어깨를 짓누르는 압도적인 무게를 벗겨 주십니다. “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라.” (마태복음 11:28)

오는 10월부터 우리는 새로운 성경 공부를 통해 하나님과 함께 “요리할” 멋진 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 목요일 오전 현장 모임과 Zoom, 그리고 가급적 주일 대예배 전 성인 주일학교 클래스를 통해 진행될 예정입니다. 또한 다음과 같은 주요 사역에서 섬겨 주실 ‘보이지 않는 하나님을 위한 보이는 손’을 찾고 있습니다.

• 기도팀: 우리 교회와 지역 사회를 위해 기도하는 팀
  
  
• 심방팀: 카드로, 문자로, 또는 직접 방문으로 따뜻함을 전하는 팀
  
  
• 선교팀: 지역 사회의 필요를 섬기는 팀 (저는 최근 9/11 사태 이후 결성되어 25년간 케이프코드 지역을 섬겨온 '나우셋 교파 간 협의회(NIA)'에 가입했습니다.)
  
  

하나님께서 우리의 보이는 손을 사용하셔서 우리의 홍해를 가르시고, 주린 이웃을 먹이시며, 이 세상에 보이지 않는 하나님을 드러내시기를 소망합니다. 아빌라의 성 테레사의 유명한 시로 말씀을 맺고자 합니다.

그리스도는 이제 땅 위에 몸이 없으십니다.

오직 여러분의 몸뿐입니다.

손도, 발도 없으십니다.

오직 여러분의 손과 발뿐입니다.

여러분의 눈이 바로

그리스도가 세상을 연민으로 바라보시는 눈입니다.

여러분의 발이 바로

선을 행하기 위해 걸으시는 그리스도의 발입니다.

여러분의 손이 바로

온 세상을 축복하시는 그리스도의 손입니다.
