A Pastoral Letter on Laity Sunday ⛪✨(평신도주일)
Dear Wellfleet UMC Family,
“Pastor, are you coming to church today? It’s your day off!”
I heard this gentle reminder a few times prior to Laity Sunday. Yes, it was technically my day off—and yet, my heart so deeply desired to be present with you to celebrate our extraordinary lay leadership!
Laity Sunday is a sacred opportunity to praise God, who equips and builds His Church through the holy partnership of clergy and laity. In the Methodist tradition, we affirm a foundational truth: we are all ministers.
When I was discussing the service with Dwight, our lay preacher for the day, he smiled and said, “Don’t worry, Pastor! We’ve been practicing Laity Sunday for a year and a half!” His words touched my heart because they are so true. For eighteen months, our congregation stepped into the breach without a resident pastor. Because of your faithfulness, your prayers, and your leadership, worship never ceased, and the mission of Christ in Wellfleet never wavered.
From its earliest days, Methodism has drawn its strength from a vibrant lay tradition. In the 18th century, John Wesley traveled over 250,000 miles on horseback and preached more than 40,000 sermons across Britain. As the movement expanded rapidly, he realized he could not carry the gospel alone. Though he initially hesitated to empower lay preachers, his mother, Susanna Wesley, urged him to equip lay people—including women—for public ministry.
Susanna herself was an extraordinary lay role model. Raising 19 children (nine of whom died in infancy) while her husband Samuel faced severe financial hardship, she anchored her home with disciplined faith. She held one-on-one Bible studies with each child and hosted Sunday evening gatherings that drew up to 200 neighbors into her home to learn and pray. When she flipped her apron over her head, her children knew she was in deep prayer with God. Through her devotion, John and Charles Wesley inherited a legacy that birthed the "Holy Club" at Oxford, daily Scripture reading, street ministry, and eventually the Methodist movement. John went on to empower remarkable lay leaders like Thomas Maxfield and Sarah Crosby—Methodism’s first licensed woman preacher.
Today, Wellfleet UMC continues to embody that same resilient, Spirit-led lay tradition. I want to express my deepest pastoral gratitude to our key lay leaders:
- Charlie Walter, who served faithfully as Lay Leader during the pastoral interim—organizing worship, communicating with the Conference, and caring for our congregation with steady devotion.
- Norma, who anchored our church as SPRC Chair and served as one of our faithful lay preachers alongside Charlie and Dwight.
- Dwight, who regularly shares God’s heart and word through his preaching and teaching talents.
- David Wright, who offers his musical gifts at the piano every Sunday with deep faith and heart.
- Corey Kielb, who keeps our church administration, bulletins, and financial record-keeping running with precision and speed.
- All Committee Chairs and Members, whose behind-the-scenes work keeps our historic sanctuary open as a beacon of hope on Cape Cod.
As a small token of appreciation, the children and I prepared heart-shaped sugar cookies wrapped in God’s love and ours, along with a custom bookmark. It is a humble gesture compared to the immense love you pour into this house, but please receive it as a symbol of our deep gratitude.
Thank you for being a church where every member is a minister. May God continue to bless you, empower your gifts, and deepen our shared ministry together.
With love and gratitude,
Rev. Youngeun Joyce Kang
Pastor, Wellfleet United Methodist Church
- Other Leadership: Richard & Karen Murphy, Regis Legnine, June Adams
