<What
Is the Best Gift in Your Life?>
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, whether worshipping in
person or online—welcome to God’s grace! What is the best gift you have ever
received? It might be a cherished memory, or something tangible you still use
today. For me, the best gift from my parents was faith. Growing up in
Korea in a devout Christian family was not always easy. As a child, I didn't
realize what a gift it was! Beyond daily morning prayers at 5:00 AM, Wednesday,
Friday, and Sunday services, our family gathered twice a day for family
worship—reading Proverbs before breakfast and memorizing scripture before bed.
Through those hours, God became the absolute center of my life. That faith
helped me receive another wonderful gift: my husband, Victor.
Praying for a faithful, godly man, God brought us together. Victor then blessed
me with our five children. We are deeply honored to raise them as God’s
stewards. Our children, in turn, gave me the gift of "Motherly
Love." Being their mother has taught me to understand God’s
sacrificial heart deeper and deeper, molding me to live as a daughter, wife,
mother, pastor, neighbor, and Christian. The gift of faith from my parents was
not a dusty souvenir kept on a shelf. It was a living gift that
continues to give birth to new blessings across generations.
If our earthly parents
know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will our Heavenly
Father give the best gifts to those who ask Him?
"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give
good things to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11)
Today, through Acts 2, my prayer is that every single
one of us will receive God’s greatest gift!
<Jesus’s Best Gift for Us>
Today, Jesus offers us His greatest gift. In Acts 1 and 2,
the disciples stayed in Jerusalem for ten days following Jesus’s instruction.
Jerusalem was a city they had only visited for Passover—the traumatic place
where their Master was executed and where religious leaders sought to arrest
them. Yet they remained.
While the disciples were faithful, I am equally amazed by
their host: Mary, the mother of Mark. Living here in Cape Cod, a famous
tourist destination, Wellfleetians know what it means to host guests. Just last
week, I hosted my first guests from Maine, who blessed our church and ministry.
Many of you frequently open your homes. But Mary hosted over 120 people
in her upper room for over ten days! Through her sacrificial hospitality, the
upper room became the launching pad where Jesus’s gift arrived. Why does Jesus
give us this gift? Because it is essential for fulfilling our purpose.
But before understanding our mission, we must know the mission of the
One who called us.
Theologian David Bosch[1]
noted that Jesus Himself was the first missionary sent by God. He laid
aside His heavenly citizenship, authority, and status as God the Son to live
among us as a missionary. From His baptism through the forty days after His
resurrection, Jesus taught one central truth: the Kingdom of God. Now,
Jesus calls us as His disciples and missionaries. This is our apostolic
mission. The Greek word for apostle is Apostolos (), which literally means "one
who is sent out"—a witness, a messenger, a missionary.
Jesus, the First Missionary, calls us right where we are.
Just as in Creation, God never sends us without preparation. Look at the six
days of Creation in Genesis 1: Days 1–3: God formed the environments (light,
skies, land, and seas). Days 4–6: God filled those environments (sun, moon,
birds, fish, and animals).
Only after preparing everything did God form humanity and
breathe His breath of life into us. In the same way, when God sends us into our
mission fields, He equips us with the ultimate gift we need: the Holy
Spirit—the Spirit of Jesus.
<The Holy Spirit: The Greatest Gift>
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus—unlimited by time or
space. That is why Jesus promised in John 16:7: "It is to your
advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to
you. But if I go, I will send him to you."
Jesus also promised in John 14:12 that whoever
believes in Him would do the works He did, and even greater works, because the
Spirit would be given.
The prophecies of Joel came alive on Pentecost—marking the
birth of the early church! The Holy Spirit arrived like a rushing wind and
tongues of fire. At the Tower of Babel, humanity was scattered by languages as
a curse; at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit used diverse languages to unite humanity
into one body.
When believers received this single gift, it began
generating countless other gifts! The early church gathered daily to read
Scripture, pray, share possessions, break bread, and enjoy fellowship. As a
result, the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved!
Peter—who had once denied Jesus out of fear—stood up on
Pentecost filled with the Holy Spirit. About 3,000 souls were converted
that day! That gift continued bearing fruit through the Apostle Paul, taking
the Gospel to the Gentiles and to the ends of the earth.
<Longing for the Holy Spirit>
My dear brothers and sisters, have you received this gift? Or
is it sitting in a dusty corner of your life like an unused ornament? When we
feel overwhelmed by our non-believing children, painful news, or societal
suffering, we must embrace our apostolic mission and seek a renewal of
the Holy Spirit! When we do, we will witness the Lord adding saved souls to our
church day by day.
John Wesley described his life-changing experience of the
Holy Spirit in his journal on May 24, 1738:"In the evening I went very
unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s
preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was
describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I
felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for
salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even
mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."
When the crowd heard Peter’s sermon, they were "cut to
the heart" and asked, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter
answered: "Repent and be baptized... and you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:37–38).
Repentance comes from hearing the Word of God that reveals
our sin. Sin literally means "missing the mark." By reading, hearing,
and studying the Word daily, and seeking God in prayer, we discover what the
true mark is—and we see how one gift gives birth to another.
My parents did not just give me fish; they taught me how to
fish.
Here in Wellfleet, we are world-famous for our oysters! Next
weekend is our town's biggest annual event—the Wellfleet OysterFest.
Receiving a single oyster is nice, but learning oyster farming creates a
sustainable heritage that produces oysters generation after generation.
In the same way, the Holy Spirit is not a one-time gift, but
an overflowing source of life across generations. My prayer is that this very
miracle happens right here among us in Wellfleet!
Closing Prayer
Gracious and loving God, send Your Holy Spirit upon all of
us gathered here today! Grant us Your greatest gift, so that like the early
church, we may fulfill our apostolic mission through the Word, prayer,
fellowship, and evangelism.
Bless our church members who begin each day with Your Word
and prayer. Bless our 12 disciples engaged in our Acts Bible study, and bless
our 13 prayer warriors who pray each day faithfully for our church to be a true
missional church.
Just as You strangely warmed John Wesley’s heart at
Aldersgate, warm our hearts today so that we may live as Your faithful
missionaries in this world.
In Jesus’s holy name we pray. Amen.

You and Victor continue to guide my spiritual walk.
