Teamwork
and the Relay Race
Dearly
beloved sisters and brothers in Christ—wherever you are sitting today, whatever
background or differences we bring into this sanctuary—God calls us all His
children today. One team. One family. One Spirit. One body.
These
aren't just churchy slogans. They describe the very way the Holy Spirit brought
the Church into being: a diverse group of people brought together at once. If I
were to compare our shared Christian calling to a sport, I’d call it a relay
race.
A church functions a lot like a relay team.
One runner completes their leg of the track, hands off the baton, and the next
runner takes off toward the finish line. Even if someone stumbles or loses
time, we’ve all seen the thrill when a teammate picks up the pace, closes the
gap, and crosses the line in victory.
My
family plays relay games at home sometimes. Even our youngest, Hannah, runs
with everything she’s got. She might fall behind her older sisters, but when
her brother or father speeds up on the next leg, our team crosses the finish
line ahead! We even do "relay dishwashing" at home. Recently, when
our youth were baking pies and muffins for their retreat, the kitchen turned
into a mountain of dirty dishes. We tackled it in 20-minute relay shifts. Doing
things in relays builds teamwork, keeps us from burning out, and gets us across
the finish line together.
In
any relay, the single most crucial moment is the baton handoff. When I
ran relays, we practiced this over and over. The technique is simple: the
runner passing holds the bottom half of the baton firmly and extends it
forward, while the runner receiving reaches back with an open hand to grab the
top half securely without dropping it or breaking stride. Once the handoff is
complete, the passing runner steps aside so the next runner has a clear lane.
Passing
and receiving the spiritual baton is just as vital in our life of faith. Today
is All Saints Sunday—a day John Wesley loved dearly. On November 1,
1767, Wesley wrote in his journal: “I always solemnly praise God for the
power that He has given to His saints, both living and dead.” On this day,
we honor those who ran before us, and we receive from their hands the baton of
grace. Yesterday was Halloween—originally "All Hallows' Eve"—the
vigil before All Saints' Day when the early church prepared to honor the
martyrs and saints. Who are the saints who ran before you and passed the baton
into your hands?
Faith
Under Fire
Look
at the early Church in Acts. Through Peter’s preaching, 3,000 people came to
faith on Pentecost, and 5,000 more shortly after! They gathered daily, broke
bread, prayed, and shared what they had so that no one was in need. Seeing
their real love, everyday people joined them daily.
But
whenever God moves, opposition follows. We live in spiritual warfare, and the
enemy always tries to disrupt God's work. First came internal deception—Ananias
and Sapphira tried to fake generosity for human praise. Then came external
persecution. Temple leaders threw the apostles into prison, but the Holy Spirit
opened the doors and sent them right back out to preach.
Persecution
followed the Church through history. For three centuries under Roman emperors,
Christians worshipped in underground catacombs to keep the faith alive.
Throughout the Reformation and global mission movements, countless believers
gave their lives. In fact, more Christians were martyred in the 20th century
under totalitarian regimes than in all previous centuries combined.
Yet
the paradox of faith is this: the more the Church was pressed, the deeper its
faith grew and the farther the Gospel spread. As the early church father
Tertullian famously wrote: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the
Church.” Just as Jesus taught that a grain of wheat must fall to the ground
and die to bear fruit, the sacrifice of faithful witnesses has sanctified the
baton passed down to us. (John 12:24)
Today,
our trials look different—secularism, busy schedules, institutional weariness.
When worship becomes comfortable, faith can lose its urgency. But the victory
belongs to Christ. God still uses every faithful believer who stays on the
track.
Fruits of Faith in Contemporary Times
The
pressure facing believers today often takes subtle forms: secularism,
hyper-individualism, and institutional exhaustion. Yet God continues to move in
powerful ways across the globe. In February 2023, a routine Wednesday chapel
service at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, unexpectedly extended into
16 days of continuous prayer, confession, and worship. Tens of thousands of
travelers gathered to experience this quiet outpouring of repentance and
spiritual renewal. Similarly, observers have noted a quiet resurgence among
younger generations—particularly Gen Z—who are seeking historic liturgy,
reverent worship, and authentic spiritual grounding in liturgical and
traditional churches across the United States and Europe. Furthermore, global
mission agencies document growing numbers of individuals in closed regions
coming to faith through dreams, visions, and personal encounters with the
Gospel. God remains active even in challenging times. As believers turn to Him
in repentance and live out their faith, the relay race continues forward.
Handoff:
Structure and Shared Leadership
Running
the race of faith requires addressing practical community needs so the handoff
remains seamless. Today’s scripture from Acts 6 provides a clear model for
shared ministry. As the early fellowship expanded, a practical tension arose:
Hellenistic Jewish widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of
food compared to Hebraic widows.
Rather
than ignoring the issue, the apostles addressed it directly. Recognizing their
primary calling to prayer and the ministry of the Word, they appointed seven
lay leaders full of the Spirit and wisdom—including Stephen and Philip—to
oversee administrative care and practical service.
The
result of this shared leadership was remarkable: Acts 6:7 records that "the
word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly
in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the
faith." The apostles did not attempt to run every leg of the race
alone. By delegating responsibilities and empowering others, they ensured that
care was distributed equitably and the Gospel continued to advance.
We
face a similar call today. God calls Wellfleet UMC to be a missional presence
in our town. As a pastor called from South Korea to serve here—a community whose
historical generosity sent missionaries across the world over a century ago—I
see God's providence at work. Yet no pastor or small group of officers can
fulfill God's mission alone.
Our
Nominating Committee continues to invite members to serve in small groups,
committees, and administrative roles. Attending a Sunday service alone cannot
substitute for the rich fellowship of serving together as one body. I encourage
every member to participate in a prayer group, Bible study, or committee. By
sharing leadership and exercising our gifts, our congregation—rich in history
and grace—can continue to be a beacon of hope for Wellfleet.
Three
Dimensions of the Christian Walk
To
run this race effectively, we must cultivate three essential dimensions of
Christian fellowship (koinonia):
- Relation to God (Upward):
Nurturing personal spiritual disciplines through Scripture reading,
prayer, and worship.
- Relation to Believers
(Inward): Engaging in mutual care through spiritual encouragement,
emotional support, and practical helpfulness within the congregation.
- Relation to the World
(Outward): Extending Christ’s love to our neighbors, sharing the
Gospel with those who do not know Him, and serving our broader community.
A
moving example of this three-fold walk was our dear brother in Christ, Bob
Coperthwaite, who entered glory yesterday. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer
twelve years ago, Bob lived those additional years as a witness to God's grace.
He studied Scripture daily, encouraged our congregation through quilting, artwork,
and altar decorations, and faithfully shared his faith with family, friends,
and neighbors up until his final days in hospice care. The baton of faith Bob
carried and passed along to his family and our church remains a precious gift.
Who
are the saints in your life? How are you carrying the baton passed to you? Let
us hold it firmly, run with perseverance, and finish well.
Closing
Prayer
God
of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God of our ancestors in faith, and Lord of our
lives: Thank You for calling us here today to continue this sacred relay race.
Sometimes the track feels lonely when those who ran before us are no longer by
our side. Sometimes the journey feels daunting, and we wonder if we have the
strength to finish well. Yet we know that He who began a good work in us will
carry it on to completion.
Grant us grace to love You wholeheartedly, to love one another deeply, and to extend Your love to our neighbors in this community. Strengthen our hands to hold fast to the baton of faith and run with perseverance until we cross the finish line. In Jesus' holy name we pray. Amen.
